When painting the sky there are a few things to remember and because this is a loosening up exercise.
We are making it up as we go.
We are making it up as we go therefore we do not have preconceived ideas about exactly how the sunset will look, just put the paint on and let the sunset evolve.
Do keep the brushstrokes in the one direction and don’t allows a dirty brush to wander into your brilliant bits of sky.
The important thing is to have a brilliant area in the lower middle of the sky and very dark corners. (you will not get dark corners with a dirty brush)

TIPS for sunset painting
1 – Start at the bottom of the sky and keep it low on your canvas. (you can always paint the horizon over the bottom of the sky if it is too low)
2 – Keep your brush strokes in the same direction (across and up at a few degrees is good)
3 – Do not go back over your brilliant white with a dirty brush.
4 – Clean your brush every time before picking up paint.
5 – Make your corners of the painting very dark.
6 – Block your foreground objects in with fresh dark paint on a clean brush.
7 – Spend a little time thinking where to put your foreground objects.
8 – Relax and do not worry about bad bits of the sky as we will place the foreground objects over the bad bits.
You may wish to paint many little sunsets to get your hand free and the paint flowing without worrying about making mistakes.
